Choose a mantram that appeals to you, and leave it to God as to which spiritual ideal is best suited to your deepest needs. indb 32 9/20/08 4:53:58 PM CHAPTER THREE • Some Great Mantrams G o d h a s b e e n called by many names in different lands and different ages, but by whatever name we call, we are calling on the same divine presence, the same ultimate reality. This is the message declared everywhere by those rare men and women who have had the daring and the resoluteness to give everything to realize the supreme goal of life and to see God in the very depths of their consciousness and simultaneously in all those around them.
For thousands of years it has stood for the ultimate reality – the transcendental Godhead beyond all names and forms, beyond all sects and all denominations. Most of us, however, do not respond deeply to the impersonal aspect of the ultimate reality. I sometimes tease my friends by asking them how they would like to have an impersonal girlfriend, a transcendental boyfriend. She is unmanifested, so how can you gaze into her eyes? He is beyond time and space, so how can you hold his hand? What most of us need and want is a personal incarnation: a figure whom we can visualize, whom we can hear stories about, whom we can love and try to model ourselves after, whether we call him Christ, Krishna, or the Buddha, or her the Divine Mother.
In traditional Hindu language, the Godhead has three functions: creation, preservation, and destruction. Krishna is the full form of God as the preserver or savior of the universe. Just as the Ramayana tells the story of Rama, the Maha bharata is the epic which tells the story of Krishna and how he acts as the guide and teacher of the forces of light in their struggle with the forces of evil. One of the world’s best-loved scriptures, the Bhagavad Gita, is a part of the Mahabharata, and it contains the essence of Krishna’s teachings.
