Somehow Maggie had managed to steel herself to accept Blake's invitation to dinner at his penthouse flat near London Bridge, overlooking the river. That night he was in euphoric mood. ' He had thrown an arm round each of them. 'You two have simply got to like each other, because I can't get along without both of you in my life. ' It was an agonising evening for Maggie. She had to admit, in all honesty, that Fiona was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. A body that somehow managed to be both slender and voluptuous at one and the same time, curving temptingly out of the scanty black velvet dress she was wearing.

He was relying on you and I was, too. You make a good team, you and Blake, and he's going to have difficulty replacing you. ' She shook her head regretfully. M. ' She had thought up the excuse on the spur of the moment, as soon as Blake had told her that his engagement to Fiona was going to be announced and that he planned to marry almost immediately, so that she could go out to Hong Kong with him as his wife. That had been the end of the road for Maggie. Hong Kong, she knew, wasn't a large place, and it certainly wasn't large enough to hold both herself and Fiona Deering.

She shook her head. For once he was giving her his full attention. He said slowly, 'I'm being a selfish bastard in offering you such a bad bargain, Maggie. ' His brow was creased suddenly into a row of furrows. ' Panic shook her. Was he leading up to calling it off? But she managed to keep her voice placid as she replied. 'Oh yes, I don't like changing my mind once I've decided on something. ' He smiled and she felt comforted that he didn't pursue the subject. Evidently he had no regrets, and nobody but she herself was aware of his lack of enthusiasm for their impending wedding.
